In Many Places in Africa

On 8 June 2024 the gallery turned to a subject that is rarely discussed: in many places in Africa, people lack access to washing facilities and clean water, to sanitation and to menstrual hygiene products.

The day was held in connection with CUCOMO e.V. (Cultural Cooperation Mozambique). The association was founded in 2022 to continue the decades-long commitment of its founders’ grandparents in Mozambique, and works there for education, culture, health and sport. In its menstruation project it aims to educate, break taboos and provide more than 5,000 girls with washable period products; a network of local mentors is to pass on knowledge about sexual and reproductive health. According to the association, up to 95 per cent of girls in Mozambique regularly miss school because of their period. More at cucomo.org.
