How the healthcare system dismisses endometriosis pain: HYSTERA coined the term “Endo Violence” for this exhibition.

From 18 March to 31 May 2023 the gallery showed “Endo Violence”, a solo exhibition by the artist and researcher Dr Alicja Pawluczuk, who works under the name HYSTERA. It was curated by Helen Sange, who had invited her in 2022 to exhibit in the newly opened gallery.

For this exhibition Pawluczuk used the term “Endo Violence” in public for the first time. It describes how people with endometriosis are systematically mistreated by society, research and the healthcare system – for example when their pain is dismissed as “hysterical” or “exaggerated”. Today the term gives its name to a funded research project at the University of Leeds.

Alicja Pawluczuk was born in Poland, earned her doctorate in digital culture in Scotland and was living in Berlin at the time of the exhibition; today she lives in the United Kingdom and works as a Research Fellow in Leeds. Her work has also been shown in Bordeaux, Leipzig, Athens and again in Berlin, among other places. More at hystera.art.

One in eight women in Germany develops breast cancer. The touring exhibition “einevonACHT.” by dasBUUSENKOLLEKTIV e.V. started here.

Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2023, “einevonACHT.” (“one of eight”) by dasBUUSENKOLLEKTIV e.V. was on show in the gallery, opening on 30 September. The title refers to the fact that one in eight women in Germany is diagnosed with breast cancer in the course of her life.

On show were “colourful body prints and black sculptures on the subject of breast cancer”, as the local neighbourhood site Kantkieze reported. The association describes the exhibition as autobiographical: it is about the diversity and beauty of women’s bodies after a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The plaster busts show what remains invisible from the outside – tumours grow differently in every breast.

“einevonACHT.” was conceived as a touring exhibition and started in the gallery. It was then shown at the Charité, at the National Center for Tumor Diseases in Heidelberg (November 2024 to January 2025) and at the Innovationstag Brustkrebs in Düsseldorf.
Behind the scenes of neo-burlesque: Berlin photographer Zora Jurenkova spent years accompanying performers backstage.

From 16 March to 6 June 2024 the gallery showed “Backstage Burlesque”, a photography exhibition by Zora Jurenkova.

For years Jurenkova photographed burlesque performers behind the stage – mainly in Berlin, for instance at the Berlin Burlesque Festival and the variety revues at the Wintergarten, but also in Hamburg, Prague and Paris. In 2020 this became her book “Backstage Burlesque”, a photographic documentation of the neo-burlesque subculture with more than 200 photos in black and white and colour. The series had previously been shown as a solo exhibition at Bassy Club (2017) and Kaffe Mitte (2019) in Berlin, among other places.

Zora Jurenkova was born in Prague, moved to California at 20 and has lived in Berlin for more than 20 years. She specialises in artistic, people and erotic photography and performs on stage herself as “Miss Popalina”.
Period poverty in Mozambique: an exhibition day with CUCOMO e.V., which supports girls with washable period products and education.

On 8 June 2024 the gallery turned to a subject that is rarely discussed: in many places in Africa, people lack access to washing facilities and clean water, to sanitation and to menstrual hygiene products.

The day was held in connection with CUCOMO e.V. (Cultural Cooperation Mozambique). The association was founded in 2022 to continue the decades-long commitment of its founders’ grandparents in Mozambique, and works there for education, culture, health and sport. In its menstruation project it aims to educate, break taboos and provide more than 5,000 girls with washable period products; a network of local mentors is to pass on knowledge about sexual and reproductive health. According to the association, up to 95 per cent of girls in Mozambique regularly miss school because of their period.
“Equal Contraception Now!” – the initiative “Gemeinsame Verhütung” makes male contraception visible and argues for shared responsibility.

“Equal Contraception Now!” – under this motto the gallery showed an exhibition on male contraception in summer 2025. Behind it is the initiative “Gemeinsame Verhütung” (shared contraception, @gemeinsame_verhuetung).

The initiative describes itself as a feminist group that educates people about contraception, with a focus on male contraception. It is one of the user committees of sharedcontraception.org, which campaign for a wide range of contraceptive methods for people with testicles – hormonal, mechanical and thermal methods as well as vasectomy.

The group is out in public with information stands and workshops. A report in the ZDF series “37°” describes its aim like this: to help men overcome their reluctance to engage with the subject and to make new ways of contraception visible.

Portraits of people with endometriosis and adenomyosis: “Hidden Heroes”, the documentary photography project by Leipzig photographer Nietze.

From 1 to 31 March 2025 the photographer Nietze showed her project “Hidden Heroes” in the gallery. Her photographs depict how people experience endometriosis and adenomyosis. The Endometriose-Vereinigung Deutschland, the German endometriosis association, also invited people to the opening on 1 March.

“Hidden Heroes” is a documentary photography project that grew out of personal experience: in 2022 Nietze herself was diagnosed with endometriosis. Since then she has photographed more than 70 people – up close, honestly and mostly in black and white; many portraits are accompanied by interviews or the sitters’ own texts. Professional perspectives from gynaecology, sex therapy, physiotherapy and nutritional medicine complement the project.

“I photograph people who aren’t seen in our system – and give them a platform to show themselves, let go of their pain and open up,” says Nietze. She was born in Berlin in 1988, lives in Leipzig and has worked as a documentary photographer since 2019; her first photo book, “Kein Halt mehr” (2021), shows Berlin’s cultural scene at a standstill during the pandemic. After the gallery, “Hidden Heroes” was shown in Leipzig in 2026, at Garage Ost. More at dnietze.com.

Kaleidoscopic imagery right down to the wallpaper: Berlin artist Torsten Solin showed “Flowers” in summer 2023.

From 24 June to 26 August 2023 the gallery showed “Flowers” by Torsten Solin.

On his website Solin lists “Flowers” as a group of works made up of light boxes (2000–2005), wallpapers and stickers; in 2005 “Flowers” was shown as public art in Jena. In other works he uses manipulated images and self-portraits to examine social stereotypes and gender roles.

Torsten Solin was born in Jena in 1972, studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and was a master student of Prof. Hans-Peter Adamski there. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 2004. His work has been shown at Galerie Torstrasse 161 and galerie hiltawsky in Berlin, at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and in New York, among other places.
What becomes visible when pain becomes a territory of its own? A duo exhibition for Berlin Art Week 2026 with Berlin artist Ina Djurković.

“What happens when pain becomes a territory of its own?” – “Mapping the Invisible” opens with this question. The works show the body as a landscape shaped by invisible borders, fragments and tensions. They explore what chronic pain can make visible and how it changes one’s relationship to one’s own body, to one’s identity and to the world.

It is a duo exhibition for Berlin Art Week 2026, created with Ina Djurković (@ina_berlina). The opening took place in the gallery on 9 September 2026 at 7 pm.

Ina Djurković was born in Serbia and lives in Berlin as a visual artist; she works mainly in painting. She studied architecture, worked for more than ten years as an architect and interior designer in Serbia and Canada, and moved to Berlin in 2023 to devote herself fully to her art. Her paintings draw on textile techniques she learned from her mother and grandmother: sewing, embroidery, mending. In her series “Misplaced Tissue” she uses coloured stitches to record how she feels over the course of a month – black for pain, red for blood.
Gilded scars after breast cancer: a photo exhibition by dasBUUSENKOLLEKTIV e.V. with pictures by the photographer Chap Chaplin.

“With Let Your Scars Shine we give bodies after breast cancer a stage,” writes dasBUUSENKOLLEKTIV e.V. about its project. It is inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, which mends breaks with gold: the scars are not covered up but gilded – as a sign of empowerment and self-determination.

For the project the association asked 24 women to show themselves. They were photographed by the advertising photographer Chap Chaplin; her mother’s death from breast cancer makes the project a matter close to her heart. The exhibition consists of photo panels with a description of the project.

Besides the gallery, “Let Your Scars Shine” has been shown at the 129th German Medical Assembly (Deutscher Ärztetag) in Leipzig in 2025 and at Kreiskrankenhaus Bergstraße in Heppenheim in autumn 2025, among other places. dasBUUSENKOLLEKTIV e.V. was founded by Rhea Seehaus and Lena Gerst, both affected by breast cancer, and is a platform for peer support, community and activism around breast cancer.
